Lucky Dog Lessons by Brandon McMillan, a Book Review

Let's talk about the dog training book Lucky Dog Lessons by Brandon McMillan. It's been bouncing through dog training circles. However, does it live up to the hype?

The Premise of Lucky Dog Lessons: Train Your Dog in 7 Days

Brandon McMillan is a well-known dog trainer in the professional dog training world. He has spent the last few years starring in the show Lucky Dog on CBS. He says that his main goal is to save dogs from shelters ‘one dog at a time’.

Lucky Dog Lessons starts with a review of your dog’s variables, or traits. These include its breed, age, life experiences, and personality. Because of these traits, you'll train your dog in a different way. A timid dog will train differently than a brave dog.

So far, so good; this has been true in my experience as well.

Is dog training really as simple as Lucky Dog Lessons shows?

Answer: Yes!

McMillan breaks down the seven main dog commands: Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Off, Heel, and No. Then, he calls these his ABCs of dog training. I have to agree because, with the exception of Yes, these cover my top dog commands.

Next, McMillan explains how to train each of these commands with grace and confidence. He provides entertaining and heart-soaring stories intermingled with education.

Is Lucky Dog Lessons worth reading?

Absolutely. This book will be one of my top recommended books for the foreseeable future. McMillan’s training methods are tried and true, only use positive reinforcement, and are incredibly effective.

I used them on my own dog for seven days and saw a big difference in her. Afterwards, she focused more on me, listened despite distractions, and seemed genuinely happier to be learning more.

Even though she already knows the commands listed, we were able to solidify Heel, Stay, and Come throughout the week.
