Dog training often requires tools outside the usual leash-and-collar duo. Some dogs are aggressive, others easily excitable, and still more are timid and run at the slightest provocation.
Because of this, owners must be extra careful to choose a collar that matches the dog’s temperament, not just the dog’s strength.
Below, I’ve organized the best collars for each dog personality as opposed to breed or strength.

Collars for the Aggressive Dog
Aggressive dogs are generally fond of lunging and growling, but not necessarily dragging the owner down the street.
There are many reasons for aggression and buying a new collar or harness is not enough to curtail this behavior. I honestly recommend reading more articles on dog-to-dog and dog-to-human aggression and finding a behaviorist near you.
Still, a collar or harness can really help.
For a dog with aggression issues, I recommend something that curtails lunging, like a front-latch harness or a Gentle Leader horse-halter collar.
Collars for the Timid Dog
If your dog tends to hide in fear when another dog comes around, growling and barking, you probably have a timid dog. These dogs don’t pull too much unless they’re in a panic, and then it’s usually to get away!
For the timid dog, I recommend either a simple Easy Walk front-latch harness (the less intimidating version of the full harness above) or a slip lead, which is a leash that tightens as your dog pulls.
Collars for the Excited and Adventurous Dogs
These are the dogs that just pull, pull, pull! I have one of these dogs myself, so I feel your frustration!!!
Three different collar/lead types have worked for me: the slip lead, the Easy Walk harness, and the Gentle Leader halter collar.
No Two Dogs are Alike
I would love to say that these collars and harnesses will all work perfectly for your dogs, but I can’t. No two dogs are alike. Many dogs who are timid are also aggressive, and some adventurous dogs get scared at the sight of a car or cat.
Still, I hope that this has helped you a bit, and that one of these options works for you!
Wishing you and your pup the very best,
Naomi
